This post is especially for Art and Christin and Kate--the raptor expert we met in Montana a few summers back (see "raptor rescue" post on August 8, 2013).
Zooming from Cairn Liath, we got to the castle just in time for the raptor talk. It was about 45 minutes of explanations and demonstrations with a number of birds. It was terrific! We learned that a few centuries ago, trained falcons were so prized that kings and queens in Europe were only allowed to own two. They would gift them to each other on big occasions like marriage agreements and peace treaties. We learned about their feathers and wings, and their sight.
The gentleman who is their trainer, and who did the talk, was fun and funny and a great presenter.
The kids still talk about his "chicken mcnuggets" (pieces of raw bird he was swinging around and feeding to the raptors he was showing).
He talked a bit about owls too. This one was funny. He took the command to sit on people's hats..
Then he was tied near us to hang out for awhile, and because their close-up sight isn't so good, he attacked the "blue snake" (the rope on the ground) for quite awhile. It made Jaffa and Eben giggle..
These are fabulous birds!
