Enzo has a few sleepovers

After six years in Dakar, our friends Jen and Fred decided to move to Cambodia.
This happened to be right around that time that the new airport opened--also just in time for the holiday travel rush--and the airport was not yet equipped to ship animals. So Enzo got to sleepover at our house.. like 100 times!

He and Blu were already buddies. Now they played and slept and ate together. Enzo even moved houses with us! And then, one day, he jumped in his crate and off he went.. 48 hours and an overnight in Dubai later.. he joined his family, and has been loving Cambodia ever since!

weekend in Somone

We took advantage of Copeland's visit to take our new year's card picture while we were in Somone at the beach. You might recognize it!

It was a great beach visit.. and we even got to see the sheep getting an ocean bath.
(And we've seen it many times since!)

Eben's first dance

Feeling excited about the 5th grade dance!

5K for IRC

Our friend Jen (third from right below) organizes a fund raiser every year to raise money for refugees. For 2017, by some crazy stroke of luck, she chose IRC to be the organization to receive the proceeds.

One of my first public speeches as an IRCer!

It was a great crew and a nice walk/run, and we raised almost $10,000!

Copeland comes to Dakar

Copeland came to visit us in Dakar for Thanksgiving!
There was lots of crafting going on..

And a trip to Gorée Island..

..with some friends on the boat!

Tô, superman cat

So as it turns out, Peanut (late to be renamed her Senegalese equivalent, Mafé) has a brother. A little while after Mafé jumped into the middle of the road in front of us, we saw her mom and her brother just about in the same place that we found her. At that point she had been with us a couple of weeks, and so we couldn't put her back with them, but we did keep an eye on them.

About a month later, as I was keeping an eye on that spot, I found Mafé's brother near that same place alone and hiding in some dead leaves, with his eye in bad shape. I grabbed him, and got him to the vet.

Poor guy!
He was operated on right away to remove the bad eye. We were really happy that he got through the surgery, because he was too little for general anesthetic and so they had to just numb the area. Soon after, the other eye started swelling.

We started medicine to try to bring the eye size down, which worked, and meantime, we got quite attached to this little guy. At the suggestion of Ousmane (our awesome driver), we named him Tô, to go with Mafé. Mafé is peanut sauce and Tô is the millet paste that you eat with it :)

From soon after we got him home from the vet, we saw that he likes to sleep like superman.

Tô has turned out to be a pretty awesome guy. His eye kept swelling and the structure inside his eye was destroyed, so he can't see but he is very smart. He figured out the layout of the entire first house we were living in, and then when we moved, he mapped the whole new house in about a day. He is sweet and sassy, he plays with Mafé and even sneaks up on her for stealth attacks! He loves his toys and his people, and his food. He is a slow eater, enjoying his meals. He doesn't like things that move fast (kittens!) and he's not sure about dogs--but Blu is growing on him.

Over the months, he has grown and learned. His eye is almost back to normal size, and he sees light. He is brave and likes to snuggle.

He finds comfy places to sleep all over the house.

And he still sleeps like superman (sometimes over top of celery!).
