So as it turns out, Peanut (late to be renamed her Senegalese equivalent, Mafé) has a brother. A little while after Mafé jumped into the middle of the road in front of us, we saw her mom and her brother just about in the same place that we found her. At that point she had been with us a couple of weeks, and so we couldn't put her back with them, but we did keep an eye on them.
About a month later, as I was keeping an eye on that spot, I found Mafé's brother near that same place alone and hiding in some dead leaves, with his eye in bad shape. I grabbed him, and got him to the vet.
Poor guy!
He was operated on right away to remove the bad eye. We were really happy that he got through the surgery, because he was too little for general anesthetic and so they had to just numb the area. Soon after, the other eye started swelling.
We started medicine to try to bring the eye size down, which worked, and meantime, we got quite attached to this little guy. At the suggestion of Ousmane (our awesome driver), we named him Tô, to go with Mafé. Mafé is peanut sauce and Tô is the millet paste that you eat with it :)
From soon after we got him home from the vet, we saw that he likes to sleep like superman.
Tô has turned out to be a pretty awesome guy. His eye kept swelling and the structure inside his eye was destroyed, so he can't see but he is very smart. He figured out the layout of the entire first house we were living in, and then when we moved, he mapped the whole new house in about a day. He is sweet and sassy, he plays with Mafé and even sneaks up on her for stealth attacks! He loves his toys and his people, and his food. He is a slow eater, enjoying his meals. He doesn't like things that move fast (kittens!) and he's not sure about dogs--but Blu is growing on him.
Over the months, he has grown and learned. His eye is almost back to normal size, and he sees light. He is brave and likes to snuggle.
He finds comfy places to sleep all over the house.
And he still sleeps like superman (sometimes over top of celery!).
