Fresh off the plane, we thought that it would be best to get the Oleksiuks a solid orientation to Jakarta by hauling them up and back to the north end of town to see what's left standing of the Dutch colonial heritage. It is a bit stunning how much of it has been left to fall apart, but just a few weeks after we visited, there was a big festival in this very square celebrating Indonesian culinary prowess as the beginning of a revival of this time in the country's history. It will be interesting to see what kind of investments are made.
The Oleksiuk's made it through the day.. got a good introduction to Indonesian food at Café Batavia (
http://www.cafebatavia.com/), toured the Puppet Museum, and played with ribbon toys on Fatahillah Square.
And Jonah had his first (of many) Lady Gaga moment.
And then we all suffered through obnoxious traffic to get home.
